In February, a dozen adventure enthusiasts embarked on the Kite Safari Colombia 2020 with Global Kite Trips. Landing at Cartagena airport, Sandra and Antoine warmly welcomed them to the serene city of Manzanillo. A quick meal revitalized them, and for those still brimming with energy, an ocean kiting session awaited right in front of the resort.

The group spent days kiting in the ocean and exploring Cartagena, one of the oldest cities in South America. The city, surrounded by a historic brick wall, offered a journey through time with its architecture, museums, and vibrant cultural scenes.

Next on the Kite Safari was Santa Veronica, or Salina Del Ray, a bay catering to all kiteboarding enthusiasts, from beginners to wave riders and big air lovers. Windy days ranging from 20kts to 30kts saw significant skill improvements, with some contemplating purchasing surfboards for future trips. Yoga sessions, fresh seafood, rice, beans, and fish added to the delightful experience.

Driving north, they reached Cabo De La Vela, a mesmerizing place with flat water and strong offshore winds. Sleeping by the water’s edge, the group fell in love with the traditional, ecologically sustainable houses and disconnected from technology to savor the pure bliss of kiting and camaraderie.

In Cabo De La Vela, a few days witnessed radiant smiles, an overwhelming sense of euphoria, and some guests even setting a new record for sleep within the Global Kite Trips community! A group member declared their bedtime at 7:30 pm, a testament to the intense daily schedule. Waking up at 5 am to catch the sunrise, followed by kiting from 10:30 am until lunch and resuming the sessions after eating until sunset.

Adding to Cabo’s allure is its consistent wind throughout the year. This perpetual breeze has shaped the local children into adept kiteboarders from an early age. The community exhibits a helping mentality, readily assisting anyone in need on the water. It’s a common sight to witness these young experts rescuing riders, swiftly returning kites and individuals to land before a rescue boat even revs its motor. The communal spirit and dedication to assisting others create a harmonious and supportive kitesurfing environment in Cabo De La Vela.

The journey continued to the northeast, revealing untouched nature and breathtaking views after a six-hour 4×4 drive. The hotel served as a rest stop before gearing up for kite days and mesmerizing downwinders through mangroves.

Exploring Colombia’s kite spots and landscapes unveiled a rich tapestry of stories from the past and an even brighter future. Beyond its historical richness, Colombia, with its diverse culture and consistent wind, proved to be an unparalleled destination for kiteboarding enthusiasts. Kiteboarding became not just a sport but a life-changing experience intertwined with travel, making the Colombian adventure truly unforgettable.
